Buying Guide
When you’re ready to go for the best powered bookshelf speakers, you’ll need to consider some factors to ensure that you’re making the right choice as not all bookshelf speakers are made equal. Here are what you should consider:
- Size and Power
Most of the bookshelf speakers in this article have been designed to not take up much room although larger speakers might deliver more power. So, you’ll need to decide whether it’s power or size that matters most to you. If it’s power, then you’ll need to check the speakers’ wattage bearing in mind that the higher the wattage, the more powerful your speakers will be. At peak power, the most powerful speakers will give out 200 watts, which is more than enough from little speakers but even a peak power of 150 watts will be sufficient.
- Connectivity
If you’re looking to use your smartphone for music, then you should go for bookshelf speakers that have Bluetooth connectivity. If you’re looking to hook your TV up to your speakers, then optical and coaxial connections will be of more importance for high-definition sound reproduction.
- Sound Quality
The sound quality of your speakers depends on the in-built drivers enclosed within them. The two most common drivers are the tweeter and woofer. The woofer is responsible for the bass tones and its size determines how powerful the bass will be, but if you’re concerned with bass, then you should go for bookshelf speakers that give room for an external subwoofer connection. The tweeter, on the other hand, is responsible for high-frequency sounds and is smaller than the woofer. For well-balanced and rich sound reproduction, be on the lookout for powered bookshelf speakers that feature a third driver that focuses on midrange sounds.
- Build Material
To prevent acoustic resonance, go for bookshelf speakers with wooden cabinets that are made from MDF and covered in a glossy vinyl for a wooden effect. An enclosed cabinet aids woofer retraction and delivers a better-sounding bass.

How We Tested
After carrying out our research and going through customer reviews, we ended up purchasing these bookshelf speakers as they all fall under $2,000. Before we started our critical evaluation, we decided to break the speakers in for about 10 hours with music played at moderate volumes. Then we put together a small group of people [five in number] and had them blindfolded. We started our round of tests by playing different songs on each one at the same moderate volumes. We used a smartphone to stream music and for the speakers with phono inputs, we connected a turntable as well. Each system was given a long listen so that the speakers that were poor performers could be identified easily by our panelists.
We made sure that the test songs used covered all dynamic ranges to know which genre the speakers would react better to than the others. We also gave room for the panelists to choose the tunes they wanted to listen to as well. After the initial feedback from the panelists, we offered to let them listen again to the shortlisted speakers in comparison to the other speakers we eliminated. Even the speakers that seemed to do perfectly well, we wanted them to listen closely for subtle queues, pay close attention to how clear the vocals are reproduced, how authentic the bass, cymbals and string instruments sounded and how dynamic each speaker could be. Once that was done, we took off the blindfold.
Next, we asked them to give their comments on the features and design of each speaker and had them recorded. We also revealed the price points of each and asked what they thought about the price points against their sound quality.
Conclusion
Going for the best powered bookshelf speakers won’t only provide the quality sound that will fit your music tastes and needs but will also blend in with your interior décor.
From our product reviews and buying guide, we’re quite sure that you’ll make the ideal choice of a bookshelf speaker system and enjoy your movies, music, and games with the latest technology available.
